Project:
Extension and Refurbishment

Client:
Culcheth Day Nursery

Cube’s role:
Design, Contract Administration & CDMC

Procurement:
Traditional JCT Contract Tendering.

The client wished to extend their existing premises to create space for an additional 84 babies, and infants. In addition the Client wished to refurbish their existing WC, changing facilities, administration suites and staff welfare facilities within the original building. The project needed to be delivered during the summer holiday period and to a strict budget.

Cube’s Approach:
The existing nursery building was originally a temporary pre fabricated structure and Cube’s challenge was proposing a design that would extend the building in an aesthetically pleasing way, be energy efficient, provide flexibility for future changing requirements and be achieved within a tight programme & budget.

After researching various construction methods, including modular build and traditional build, Cube proposed a pre manufactured SIPP structure, which would not only come within budget but provide maximum design flexibility and deliver high thermal values.

Cube developed an outline design and working closely with the manufacturer, ensured that this was a workable solution to meet the site constraints.

A specialist SIPP manufacturer was instructed by Cube for the pre site assembly and a main contractor was procured to complete the ground works, building envelope finishes and building interior layouts and finishes.

During the delivery of the project the foundations had to be redesigned due to unforeseen ground conditions. Cube stringently value engineered this aspect, which ensured that the project was delivered within the required time frame and didn't exceed the Client's budget.

The project completed in time for inspection and certification by the Local Authority, enabling the staff and children to start the new term in new surroundings.
